twitter: heading in to work again..then off to watch the pens - we all know how important this game is.

Like a lot of people have in the past week or so, I received an invitation to join a group created by Monica Rockle. The group, called “Psychology Marketing project - I need your help!!!”, is supposedly created to help poor Monica get some research information for her marketing project. I took a look at it because I’m a marketing student myself. Turns out Monica’s project is about the value of viral marketing and how Facebook can be utilized to market to thousands of students. Monica wants everybody to join the group so she can show her professor just how quickly a message can be spread using Facebook.

Well, it turns out that Monica Rockle also has taken a keen interest in La La Land Shirts, some Cafepress company I won’t link too. Her profile proudly displays photos of many shirts from La La Land and her marketing group lists it’s homepage as that of La La Land Shirts, which is really odd.

Freddy Nager has taken Monica to task and launched a deep investigation. Nager thinks that Rockle’s viral marketing “project” is really just viral marketing by La La Land. Monica is probably some 50 year old dude who spends too much time on the computer.

But anyway, the point is that Facebook is still very vulnerable to spam. Most of it is subtle, but with the 3rd party applications and ads becoming more prevalent, it won’t be long before Facebook is the same piece of online trash that MySpace has become. There are days when I contemplate just getting rid of Facebook. While it is a nice way to keep in touch, it’s also a waste of time and it won’t be long before the ads/spam become overwhelming. People like Monica Rockle are finding ways to get their message across one way or another.
